It's tough at the top!

Regardless of whether you are the Director General of the BBC or running your own small business - being the person in charge is hard work.

More junior members of the team may envy your position and your perks but when the ‘buck stops’ with you it can be a very lonely place.

I don’t know anyone who runs a business that deliberately sets out to get things wrong and to make poor choices but the fact is it happens.

What my job has taught me is that those at the top benefit from support, advice and counsel from their team and sometimes from external sources.  Often, people assume that if you are in charge then you have all the answers.  Well that might well be true for some but in my experience certainly not for all.

Someone once said that a definition of an Executive is someone who makes a lot of decisions and some of them are even right!
